I always thought it was corn that was taken off the stalk. Of course I have absolutely no idea. That's just my guess.

That was my thought too. When you open it or pull it off the stalk, it cracks.

I'm going to be a scarecrow and Iris is going to be a pumpkin from my pumpkin patch. I'm going to help out at my churches fall event and then pass out candy to our neighborhood trick or treaters.

You don't really trick or treat in Taiwan (or Australia for that matter). I did buy the kid a Snow White costume today.

Gabo, does Taiwan celebrate Halloween? I would be fine with having no trick or treaters so long as I could still walk around all day in costume and go to a haunted house.

It's not really the same as it is there. They sell decorations and costumes in the stores, but it's mostly something of an excuse for schools to do something different. Bars and clubs will have Halloween themed parties, but beyond that there's no real celebration to speak of. They may show a few horror movies on one of the movie channels on TV... however some years they just completely forget to program it that way.

Oh sweet baby Jesus, I'm so full of sweets. There was a potluck at work today and half the people brought a dessert.

The first one was to celebrate a co-worker getting his American citizenship, and the one next week is because someone is retiring. People bring in treats every so often without a special reason, I think. I brought in five dozen cookies the Friday of my first week and they were gone before first break.

I hear that. Brian seems to have cake at the office like three times a week. Haha. Of course I like to bake goodies for them from time to time. I've definitely become a popular gal at the office.

It seems like way too long since I've had a chance to sit down at the computer. How was everyone's Halloween? I went in my Dead Red Shirt costume to work and there were a handful of foreign-born co-workers that were not as used to Halloween and got very distressed over my bloody head wound Smile

You can't have been the only person they saw who had gore on their costume, can they? If you can even call a head wound gore...

I forgot about it, so my daughter didn't get to wear her Snow White costume on the day. She did wear it three or four times before that. It was kind of cute. Not like she did anything though. It's not like I can go around to everybody's house and say give me candy or I'll TP your yard. First of all, the toilet paper doesn't come in rolls. Perhaps more importantly, though, nobody has a yard... so it'd be difficult regardless.

...American holidays...

...I never had Trick-or-Treat-ing when I was a boy about twenty years ago now. It became a big thing when I was in secondary school and too old to do it anyway. The big thing around this time of year for me was always Bonfire Night, or Guy Fawkes Night. We have this big show every year on the first Wednesday of November - for practicalities sake the council always have it then instead of the traditional 5th of November - where a Guy - a straw or cloth figure - is placed on top of a bonfire and burnt to ashes while fireworks are set off in celebration and remembrance of the defeat of the catholic plot to murder King James I in Parliament with Gunpower - though the history isn't a big thing and its more about the specticle now than anything else - still, we have the nursery rhyme to go with it:

Remember, remember the Fifth of November
Gunpower, treason and plot
I see no reason why Gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot

I always thought Guy Fawkes Night was a thing people say they celebrate but really don't. Like Australian's celebrating Australia Day. Really we just use it as an excuse to get drunk.

We dont celebrate it anymore, not really, we use it as an excuse to have big firework displays.

I was the only person dressed up in the production area. I think that there were some office folks in costume, but we only see them in the break room.

How does the toilet paper come? In sheets like tissues?

The first time that I ever heard about Guy Fawkes Day the lady that said it spoke really quickly and I thought she was saying "get fucked" day.

I had to work today Sad Blech. First time in years that I've had to work on a Saturday, but there's some fancy pants customer coming next week and so everyone was asked to work today and tomorrow, if possible. Many people suddenly became very religious and couldn't work on Sunday. I said no because there's no way I'm agreeing to work twelve days in a row! I have more eight hours of overtime for this week anyway.

Funny how many people suddenly decide to "go" to church when asked to work on Sundays. I, however, am one of those people that actually go. So when I tell bosses that I won't work on Sunday, that's non-negotiable. Sunday I have church, then Sunday school, then grocery shopping, and then choir practice at church.

Anybody have any interesting Thanksgiving plans? Any good Thanksgiving recipes?

My parents are coming up to visit Brian and me if the weather isn't too bad. If it is and they don't come, Brian and I are headed to Roswell, NM the day after Thanksgiving to see his family.

Ooo, your first holiday in your new home!

Thanksgiving is a big deal on my Dad's side of the family. Unless plans change last minute, about 50 people are going to gather in my aunt and uncle's house up the road from my parents and eat until we pass out. The gathering the Saturday after Thanksgiving for my Mom's side will be much smaller and we'll pretend to be fancy with the good plates and nice clothes. The only Thanksgiving tradition that my families have apart from bringing certain foods is to draw a name for Secret Santa for Christmas.

Thanks giving is a big deal here too because the Costco starts selling egg nog right after it's over.
