Thornton To Star In Nightmare On Elm Street Remake
13 August 2008 12:35 AM, PDT
Billy Bob Thornton will star as Freddy Krueger in a new Nightmare On Elm Street movie. The 53-year-old actor will take on the chilling role in a remake of the 1984 original. Robert Englund, who played the part in eight films, revealed that Thornton will star in the horror films and is an "excellent choice" for the role. He adds, "A big budget should mean the film will look a lot better than some of the old movies."

Robert Englund was brilliant as Freddy Krueger. I never thought they'd replace him... but, well, meh.

At the end of the day, if the movie's good I won't really care too much. If it sucks, then I've still got the original 8 movies (all of which I enjoy on one or another level).

Jackie Early Haley. I guess either that Billy Bob stuff was just talk or he pulled out.

Pictures look good though. They're going to do the story right, I think.

Yeah, dude from The Watchmen is Freddie. Billy Bob has been out for a while.

Still, Robert Englund is Freddie. Can't imagine someone else. The role is iconic.

But, every other major role can be filled. James Bond, Superman, etc.

I'll still see it. Nightmare on Elm St movies were always my favorite.

Same here. I was all like Robert England is Freddy before, but those pics are pretty cool. I'm onboard for this.

Makeup looks exactly the same. I thought this dude was a little on the short side. England was kinda of tall? No matter.

Just have to get the voice right.

Looks cool. The voice just isn't right.

Dunno if I will check this one out. Can't mess with the original.

Makes me want to re-watch it. Been years.

Watched the original a few weeks ago. Buffy and I were talking and both agreed the voice is way off. I mean it could turn out being cool with that voice, we'll see. Should be cool enough.

Robert Englunds voice made the character. It's like taking away his metal claw deal.

Voice - stripe sweater - hat - claw - burned face = recipe for Freddy.

Englund isn't that old... wonder why they re-cast.

To start fresh I guess. I think parts of the clip seem corny. Like him pulling off his clothes like superman to reveal the red and green sweater... and the girl saying 'he comes to me in my dreams'

Maybe they seem better in the movie, but in the clip it was kind of dumb. Everything else seemed awesome.

I need this movie to be out NOW.

April 30th, though, not too long. Hope it comes to Taiwan around the same time.

If you're in the US, you can go catch this.

I found out it comes out here on the 14th of May. AWESOME. I'm there.

Caught this yesterday. It was slower than I imagined it would be. They've worked on the story a bit to give you a lot more background, but I fail to see the point of some of it. I do like the way the deaths were worked out, and were in no way comical or cartoonish like the original movie series got. They really seemed to work on the reality of dreams, rather than just saying "oh she's scared of cockroaches - what if we turn her into one?" So that aspect was good. I didn't like the whole "am I awake or am I asleep?" aspect to it though.

Thinking back over this, it's a tad weird. I mean... trying to think out the story, it just seemed like we were following characters, we'd see one die, then another would come back. Then we'd follow another character and they'd die... and it just seemed to be this same thing over and over again. There were a few good scares, but as a whole... I just don't know...

I watched this for the second time last night, and I am still horribly disappointed with the movie. There are some scenes that are great, such as the opening scene in the diner, and the idea that once this dude dies Freddy has 6 minutes more to play with him (because his brain's still functioning; interesting if it's true...) - the concept is kind of scary.

Overall, though, the movie - even distancing it from the original series - is nothing special. My main issue is with the script, which has basically included these lame, pussy teenagers who basically sit around and wait to die while in a panic. They're pathetic. And for some reason, they all keep their heads down for most of the movie. At one point when one of them was dying I was surprised she actually had a face, I thought everybody was just a talking hair-line.

While the movie is what it is, and I'm not going to be like "oooh you've ruined the Nightmare on Elm Street series!", there's just nothing special about this movie. They've tried to do something different, and I guess that should be appreciated, but they threw subtlety out the door and basically force fed you the entire story from beginning to end.

Even as a stand-alone movie, without the original series having ever existed, I wouldn't enjoy this too much.
