Wicked: The Life and Times of
the Wicked Witch of the West

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wicked:_The_Life_and_Times_of_the_Wicked_Witch_of_the_West

My birthday is tomorrow, and in my old age, Sandy June bought me the Watchmen extended Blue Ray DVD. Also we went to the book store, and I was looking around, and got Wicked, which I have been meaning to buy since sometime in 2004 when Mystic and Lawless were talking about the musical in some thread.

I read the first page in the book store, and really dug it, so I went ahead and got it. I had the choice between the 8 dollar cheap paperback and the 16 dollar paperback (picture up top), and went with the 16 dollar one. I really like the look of it and the art. You open the cover, and the hole you see the face and hat of the witch, is now a full page of her holding a baby monkey. She is also petting a wolf and a cat is by her.

Been reading some today, still in chapter one, but it really is a good book.

Very happy about it, as there seem to be two sequels.

I reckon you'll love it. I didn't. Dekka thought it was pretty good. But I just. No, not for me. Definitely your cup of tea.

I finished up. I might do a review later this weekend.

One of the best books I'v read in awhile. The ending depressed me.

Spoilers:

I had read the chapters in the contents, and the last was Murder and the Afterlife, so as I read the book, and Elfie was worried about having no soul, and sure there was no afterlife, I didn't take it to heart, I assumed because of the chapter title that she was going to win out in the end after all this gloom and doom.

She didn't, it said she died and was dead, no afterlife for witch's.

I found that gut wrenching and sad, more or less bummed me out, as I had grown very fond of Elfie. She went nuts at the end, but it was from drinking the Wizard's elixar and from going without sleep. Up to that time, she was messed up, but her goals were admirable.

It was sad too, that at the beginning and even towards the end, she was all Animal rights, but she got so warped she was killing monkeys trying to sew wings on them, and killed all her familiars trying to attack Dorothy, and wanted to make the Lion some kind of slave or experiment. She wasn't herself towards the end, but...

Oh well, best book I'v read in awhile, I'll probably get the sequels.

There were some shock jock moments that I didn't like, stuff that even Stephen King wouldn't write, weird sexual rape stuff, could have done without that, that was just creepy. I ignored it and moved on.

One that hurt me the most was the military dudes wanted to rape Dorothy. (the commander had the one guy hung on a wheel for wanting to do it and crows were eating on him while still alive)

That was near the end of the book, and it was way to late to throw it out the window. Guy that wrote it had no self edit.

That was some crazy stuff right there!

I might have to check this book out. Sounding more and more interesting.

You tore through it, Whizzle. Read that bad boy quick.

Would you reccommend though?

I reckon you'd get a kick out of it too HECK, now that I think about it. Imagine a really fucked up wizard of ozzy fantasy story.

I was hoping it'd be something similar to the original stories, but it was a whole other thing all together.

I don't know, I don't know. I enjoyed it, but it had a lot of words I didn't understand, really during the college years when they were talking all funny trying to sound smart.

And parts of it is slow. Really it's a political book, like 1984.

I would see if Google Books has a blurb of it, and see if you like the writing...

The preview sucks, I can type some of it out. Excuse the typos:

A mile above Oz, the Witch balanced on the wind's forward edge, as is she were a green fleck of the land itself, flung up and sent wheeling away by the turbulent air. White and purple summer thunderheads mounded around her. Below, the yellow brick road looped back on itself like a relaxed noose.

Though winter storms and the crowbars of agiatators had torn up the road, still it led, relentlessly to the Emerald City. The Witch could see the companions trudging along, manueuvering around the buckled sections, skirting trenches, skipping when the way was clear. They seemed oblivious to their fate. But it was not up to the Witch to enlighten them.

There were four of them. She could see a huge Cat of some sort, a Lion was it? and a shiny woodman. The Tin Woodman was picking nits out of the Lion's mane, and the Lion was muttering and squirming from the aggravation. And animated Scarecrow lolled nearby, blowing dandelion heads into the wind. The girl was out of sight behind shifting curtains of willow.

"Of course to hear tell it, it is the surviving sister that is the crazy one," said the Lion. "What a Witch. Psychologically warped, possesed by demons. Insane. Not a pretty picture."

"She was castrated at birth," replied the Tin Woodman calmly. "She was born hermaphrocitic, or maybe entirely male."

"Oh, you see castration everywhere you look," said the Lion.

"I'm only repeating what folks say," said the Tin Woodman.

Would be kind of like if someone wrote a follow-up to Winnie The Pooh and the Rabbit was talking about cornholing the pig.

Pooh: The piglet is a communist, he believes in equal distribution of wealth.

Tigger: Let's cornhole his commie ***.

Rabbit: Piglet is more of a Socialist, even though he wants some State run industry, he is not 100% against the Free Market.

Piglet: Hey guys, I went to the erotic store and got some sex toys!!! Come over to my house and lets see what we can do with them!!!

Pooh: **** you Piglet. We support the Gold Standard here. You take your quasi sexual Commie propaganda elsewhere!!!

I never did like that Christopher Robin. (He was a skinny yuppie health Nazi)

I liked Pooh. He sat around and ate Honey. Didn't do much of nothing. Went mooching around now and again from some food.

Pooh was laid back. Didn't care he was fat. Just rolled with it.

His name was Winnie the Pooh... like he was a pooh. Like poop? I don't get it.

Also, I was at the bookstore today. Saw two other Wicked books. One about a witch's kid, the other about the Lion. Wonder if those are any good. The lion had glasses. Eyewear on animals is hilarious.

Second one has some man on man romance. I might skip it and go to book three.

Might not. Not sure yet.

yep, that's the one. It got bad reviews compared to the first one. but the first one got a lot of bad reviews because folks watch the musical and want to read the book and instead of happy song time, it's heady political drama and people getting raw deals...

I loved it though!
