Opie and Anthony Apologize for Joking About Raping Condoleezza Rice

WASHINGTON —XM Satellite Radio shock jocks Opie and Anthony apologized Friday for airing a homeless man's crude comments that he'd like to have sex with Condoleezza Rice, Laura Bush and Queen Elizabeth.

The remarks were made on their show Wednesday by a guest the duo call Homeless Charlie. As the name of each woman came up, the guest said he would like to have sex with her -- using language not fit for print.

Opie and Anthony laughed as they imagined Rice's "horror" while describing a violent sexual encounter in which Rice is punched in the face.

Washington-based XM condemned the remarks.

"We deplore the comments made on Wednesday's 'Opie & Anthony Show,"' XM spokesman Nathaniel Brown told The Associated Press on Friday. He would not say whether XM planned to take disciplinary action.

Opie and Anthony, whose full names are Anthony Cumia and Greg "Opie" Hughes, apologized to listeners on Friday's show.

"We apologize to the public officials for comments that we made on our XM show on May 9th. We take very seriously the responsibility that comes with our creative freedom and regret any offense that this segment has caused," they said.

So, how long will it be before THEY are fired?

I read an article just now that said they are back on Monday, pretty much nothing will be done to them. Al Sharpton is getting involved, but who knows.

All I have to say about Al Sharpton is that the dude has a BAD past... and that he's a man who lives in a glass house, and should stop throwing stones, because his "house" is going to shatter someday.

I don't agree with the dj's and their comments... but Al Sharpton needs to back off.

In all honesty, there should be a little something done about such comments. Though, I don't think that they will ever stop censorship in America. People want the right to freedom of speech, without giving a crap about hurting other people's feelings.

That's harsh, seriously. Who'd seriously talk like that, even as a joke?

Sweet Jesus, here we go again. Sharpton is going to be all up XM's ass like with the Imus deal just because Rice was mentioned.

This isn't public radio. It's subscription based, why in the hell should they be censored.

Is what they said funny? No. But that doesn't matter.

Opie & Anthony are your typical shock jocks with a history of doing stuff like this. Not surprised.

Yeah, it's satellite radio. Like what Howard Stern is on now.

I want XM radio bad, all these sports games, tons of talk radio.

The problem is... even with SUBSCRIPTION radio, people record it and put it on youtube, and other things. So, EVERYONE hears about it. It isn't a matter of not listening to said PAID radio shows.

Hm, but it's a different kettle of fish when it's subscription radio. It's not whether people will hear it or not, but you expect a certain amount of offensive crap when it comes to these kinds of shows. When it's public radio, it's a tad different, because people are more bound to their sponsor's wants/needs, and particularly don't want to reflect bad on them.

I won't condone what they said at all, it's just dumb, but freedom of speech is for everything, not just the stuff you agree with or find amusing. Also applies to the stuff you find horribly offensive.

I'm just saying that it gets out, and that people are going to try and burn someone at the stake, because that is where we've gone. People like Al Sharpton are going to do whatever it takes to see the person(s) responsible go down in their ship, so to speak. I don't agree with, or condone, what was said on that radio show. It's horrible. I don't see WHY it needs to be said. But, I don't, and won't, listen to those kinds of shows. I would rather build someone up than tear them down. But the point it, people are going to find out about such comments, no matter what... and all hell is going to break loose.

I think they need fired, talking about Raping government officials and the Presidents wife, that's a level of sickness that doesn't deserve protection.

It looks like Imus created a monster here. It's like Janet Jackson all over again:

CBS Radio Pulls Show After D.J.’s Prank Call to Chinese Restaurant

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: May 13, 2007

One month after the firing of radio host Don Imus, a pair of suspended New York shock jocks have been permanently pulled from the air by CBS Radio for a prank phone call rife with Asian stereotypes.
“The Dog House with JV and Elvis,” featuring Jeff Vandergrift and Dan Lay, “will no longer be broadcast,” CBS Radio spokeswoman Karen Mateo said yesterday.
CBS Radio dismissed Mr. Imus in April for a comment he made about the Rutgers women’s basketball team. He plans a $120 million breach of contract lawsuit.
The cancellation of the other show yesterday, nearly three weeks after Mr. Vandergrift and Mr. Lay were suspended, was another indication of the increased scrutiny on radio hosts and the heightened sensitivity of management to complaints in the wake of Mr. Imus’s firing.
“This is a victory not only for the Asian-American community, but for all communities who find themselves constant targets of racist and sexist programming,” said Jeanette Wang, an executive with the Organization of Chinese Americans.
Ms. Mateo declined to comment further on the “JV and Elvis” show, whose time slot on WFNY-FM was immediately after that of the shock jocks known as Opie and Anthony.
Gregg Hughes, who is Opie, and Anthony Cumia return to the station’s airwaves tomorrow after issuing an apology for a segment on their own satellite radio program in which they laughed as a homeless man fantasized about raping Condoleezza Rice and Laura Bush. The Rev. Al Sharpton, who played a role in Mr. Imus’s firing, said that Mr. Hughes and Mr. Cumia should also be fired.
Mr. Vandergrift and Mr. Lay made their comments on April 5. The pair broadcast a call to a Chinese restaurant; the caller, in an exaggerated accent, placed an order for “shrimp flied lice,” claimed he was a student of kung fu and compared menu items to employees’ body parts.
The initial airing of the call went unnoticed, but a re-airing of the segment after Mr. Imus’s firing prompted an outcry from Asian-American groups.
Mr. Vandergrift and Mr. Lay were initially suspended without pay, but Asian-Americans quickly demanded the same penalty that had been applied to Mr. Imus.
Ms. Mateo would not comment on the status of the contracts of Mr. Vandergrift and Mr. Lay or whether they were still on the CBS payroll.
As word spread about the fate of JV and Elvis, more than 100 people turned out for a rally in Union Square in support of them and other radio personalities under fire. “I find censorship to be far more offensive than anything that was said,” said Debbie Wolf of Far Hills, N.J., president of People Against Censorship.

Completely agreed. I know I sound like a broken record but unpopular speech has to be protected the most.

And it gets out because rabble rousers and shit disturbers blow smoke up the stories ass so we all hear about it. I don't listen to Stern but I hear about what he does. It's good fodder for us to wax over here but the second we start joining some trumped up cause to get these DJ's yanked from the air is when it goes too far.

And for the record, Opie & Anthony just played a call from a homeless guy making those comments.

What did these jackwads do on their prank call?

Man, CBS Radio is clamping down big time.

NEW YORK, May 15 (Reuters) - Ribald radio show hosts "Opie & Anthony" were suspended for 30 days after a guest spoke about forcing U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and First Lady Laura Bush to have sex with him, XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. (XMSR.O: Quote, Profile , Research) said on Tuesday.
In the latest flap over radio shock jocks, the satellite radio company said it "deplored" the comments made about one week ago on the show, which is hosted by Gregg "Opie" Hughes and Anthony Cumia.
The hosts issued an apology soon after the original airing, but XM Satellite said it was not convinced the two were sincere.
if(!CMSB_ID){var CMSB_ID=""} CMSB_ID+="051507_MIDART_editorschoice,";document.write('');

"Comments made by Opie and Anthony on yesterday's broadcast put into question whether they appreciate the seriousness of the matter," the company said in a statement.
"The management of XM Radio decided to suspend Opie and Anthony to make clear that our on-air talent must take seriously the responsibility that creative freedom requires of them."

For fucks sake.

I swear, our country's symbol of freedom is going to change from the Bald Eagle to a hairy puss.

Radio is going to turn into dead air in between Happy Meal commercials.
